Leaner Tevez could be a good fit for Golden Shoe

Carlos Tevez has decided to go on a diet of fruit and vegetables as he bids to slim down and inspire Argentina to World Cup glory.

The Manchester City star has admitted to not always paying attention to his weight during the regular season, but a lean and hungry Tevez is a prospect that any defender should fear.

With 29 goals for his club last season, Tevez is in scintillating form, and he is a very tempting bet at 33/1 to claim the Golden Shoe.

Should he replicate the form which saw him shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year, he could be set to become the first Argentinian to win the Golden Shoe since Mario Kempes in 1978.

Should Tevez win the prize, the omens will be very promising for Argentina, because when Kempes bagged the award in 1978, Argentina won the World Cup.

And with creative forces such as Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi supplying endless goalscoring opportunities, Tevez is also a worthy candidate at 6/1 to be Argentina’s top scorer during the tournament.

Of all the squads at the World Cup, Argentina coach Maradona – another whose weight fluctuations generate headlines – has arguably the most potent collection of attackers, but Tevez’s place is unlikely to be under threat.

Indeed, the former Manchester United player will be expected to lead the Argentinian attack, as he is the most experienced striker with 52 international appearances.

Who do you think will be Argentina’s top scorer? Diego Milito is 5/1. See the full Argentina Specials market.
