Germany vs England – Cacau adds to German casualties
Published:Germany have suffered another setback ahead of their encounter with England, as striker Cacau becomes the latest player to be hit with an injury.
Stuttgart’s Cacau is ruled out of the England match having damaged a stomach muscle in training, and there is a risk that he may not play again at the World Cup.
Germany will, however, have Miroslav Klose back from suspension, and the Bayern Munich striker’s return will be a boost to Joachim Low’s side.
Klose scored in Germany’s 4-0 win against Australia, and he only needs five goals to become the top scorer in World Cup history. He is 7/1 to score first against England.
Although Klose’s return will lift Germany, Cacau’s potential impact as a substitute – he came off the bench to score against Australia – will be missed.
England will also be wary of Klose’s attack-minded team-mates, as Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil have both been in scintillating form.
Podolski is 8/1 to open the scoring and Ozil, who is struggling with an ankle injury, is 14/1 to score first.
Ozil may also be worth backing at 9/2 to score at any time. He scored one and created another two goals for Germany’s under 21 side when they thumped England’s under 21s 4-0 last summer, and he could well prove to be the thorn in England’s side again.
If Bastian Schweinsteiger fails to recover from his thigh injury, the onus will be on Ozil to provide the creative spark in Germany’s midfield.
And should Ozil can maintain his sparkling form, Germany will be even more confident of defeating England. A Germany win is priced at 7/4.
