England out after humiliating defeat by clinical Germany

Germany beat England 4-1 to march on to the quarter finals of the World Cup and inflict upon the Three Lions their heaviest ever Finals defeat.

The result is an embarrassing end to an England campaign that will ultimately go down as a debacle, but the big win will invigorate a German team who must now be confident of making it all the way. They are now 5/1 to win the World Cup.

A classic strike from World Cup veteran Miroslav Klose and a well-taken goal from Lukas Podolski put Germany two up before a Matthew Upson header gave England hope.

But a Joachim Low’s men extinguished any designs Fabio Capello’s side had on progressing with two counter-attack goals finished off by Bayern Munich youngster Thomas Muller.

In truth England’s chances were severely hampered by inept refereeing, with each linesman making a major error: Klose started in an offiside position for the opening goal and, at 2-1, Frank Lampard had a long-range effort bounce two yards over the line after hitting the crossbar.

How far can Germany go? They are now 5/1 fourth favourites to win the World Cup.
