England ease to comfortable win against Platinum Stars

Fabio Capello will have been pleased to see his England side emerge unscathed from their final warm-up match before the World Cup.

Goals from Jermain Defoe, Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney wrapped up a comfortable, if unspectacular, 3-0 win against the Platinum Stars.

After a lacklustre first half in which Defoe’s second minute strike was the only goal, England came to life in the second period following the introduction of 10 substitutes.

Joe Cole was the only player to play in both halves, and the Chelsea midfielder showed sufficient glimpses of creativity to suggest that he will have a significant role to play in England’s campaign.

Aaron Lennon and James Milner were lively additions to a rather placid encounter, while Cole and Rooney’s goals added a sprinkle of class to what was otherwise a routine run-out.

The only blemish was a needless yellow card that Rooney picked up for dissent, though the caution will not affect his international disciplinary record.
