Dangerous Ghana could give England a second round scare
Published:Ghana have emerged as a potential second round threat for England after opening their World Cup account with a 1-0 win against Serbia.
Asamoah Gyan’s 84th minute penalty secured a deserved victory for Milovan Rajevac’s team, who are now 7/2 to win Group D.
Should Ghana build on their impressive start by qualifying from Group D, they could face England in the round of 16, who are potentially vulnerable at 19/10 to be knocked out at this stage.
Fabio Capello’s side, who were unconvincing in their 1-1 draw with the USA, could struggle against Ghana, whose effervescent midfield outplayed their Serbian counterparts.
Even without star men Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Stephen Appiah, it was in midfield where the Black Stars shone brightest, with Udinese’s Kwadwo Asamoah and the 20-year-old Marseille prospect Andre Ayew in particularly good form.
If England win their group and Germany manage to pip Ghana to first place in Group D, Capello’s side should be concerned about the possibility of facing Ghana in the second round.
Ghana are a side packed with pace, power and creativity, and boosted by the return of Muntari and Appiah, they could shock England, who are 19/10 to be eliminated in the last 16.
