Card-happy Brazilian takes charge of England opener
Published:Brazilian referee Carlos Simon will take charge of England’s World Cup opener against the USA on June the 12th.
A journalist by trade, the 44-year-old has come under fire in his native country recently for his performance in a domestic match between Vasco and Botafogo, with both coaches complaining to the Brazilian authorities.
Simon is highly regarded by FIFA, though, and this will be the start of a record third World Cup campaign for the South American.
Simon will be familiar to England fans, as he was in charge for their opening match against Sweden at the 2002 World Cup.
The 44-year-old is no stranger to controversy, and he caused a stir at the last World Cup when he appeared to smile when sending off Sweden’s Teddy Lucic.
Other notable dismissals include Carlos Tevez, who received his marching orders from Simon during Argentina’s World Cup qualifying 1-1 draw with Paraguay in 2008.
Simon has a reputation for being rather liberal with his cards, which could be an issue for the volatile characters in England’s ranks.
Wayne Rooney, for example, may need to keep his temper in check as he is 5/1 to be sent off during the World Cup.
English official Howard Webb will have to wait until June the 16th for his first involvement as he will take charge of Spain’s Group H encounter with Switzerland.
