Both Dunga and Maradona keen to emulate Franz Beckenbauer
Published:Two ex-World Cup winning captains will be vying to double the historical list of men who have held aloft the trophy as both captain and coach.
So far, Franz Beckenbauer is the only man lucky enough to have felt that particular warm breeze on his ego – winning as captain in 1974, then as coach in 1990.
The Brazilian, Mario Zagallo, also won the thing as player and coach – twice as a player in 1958 and 1962, then once as a coach in 1970 – but he never had the honour of captaining his national side.
Other World Cup winning captains who have had a crack at football glory whilst wearing a gentlemanly suit include Argentina’s 1978 skipper Daniel Passarella – who took Argentina to the quarter finals in 1998.
Dino Zoff led the Italians to victory in 1982, and went on to manage the team during Euro 2000 (where they were runners-up) – but never made it to a World Cup as a coach.
And Lothar Matthaus – Germany’s designated trophy lifter in 1990 – tried in vain to bring the glory years back to Hungary, when the team failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
The two men in question this year, of course, are Argentina’s 1986 hero Diego Maradona, and Brazil’s stand-in captain from 1994, Dunga.
The current world cup odds favour Dunga to find a comfortable spot alongside De Kaiser – Brazil being the tournament second favourites, with odds of 9/2.
Whilst Maradona’s Argentina are the third favourites at 6/1.
