Bold backing of more surprises could reap huge rewards

Serbia’s 1-0 dismantling of Germany is the latest in a flurry of World Cup upsets, and there could be plenty more to come.

Having lost to Ghana in their opening match, Serbia weren’t given much hope against a German side who romped past Australia 4-0, but Raddy Antic’s side confounded the doubters.

This result, however, paled in comparison to Switzerland’s 1-0 humbling of pre-tournament favourites Spain, which was undoubtedly the shock of the World Cup so far.

Spain could be victims of further Group H embarrassment when they face Chile, who were excellent in their 1-0 win against Honduras. Chile are 9/2 to leave Spain red faced again when they sides meet on June 25th.

Another international Goliath to be floored by less illustrious opposition was France, who were desperately poor during their 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

Although Mexico are no minnows, the ease with which they dismissed the former World Cup winners was alarming.

Les Bleus may appear to have hit rock bottom, but hosts South Africa can compound the misery for Raymond Domenech’s men by beating them on June 22nd.

South Africa are 3/1 to win their final Group A match against France, and Bafana Bafana will be keen to end their tournament on a high for their fans.

Portugal are another of the big guns whose reputation could be under threat when they play North Korea, who confounded dismissive expectations in their gallant 2-1 loss to Brazil.

A draw is 4/1, which is made more tempting when you consider Portugal’s recent 0-0 draw with Cape Verde Islands. Cape Verde Islands are 114th in the FIFA world rankings, which is actually lower than North Korea’s ranking of 105.

And should Portugal reproduce the profligate form they showed during their 0-0 stalemate against Ivory Coast, North Korea will fancy their chances of adding to the World Cup’s catalogue of shocks.
