Argentina vs Nigeria – Messi and co could torment Super Eagles

Published:

As 6/1 contenders to win the World Cup, Maradona’s Argentina side are expected to begin their campaign with victory, and they are 1/2 to beat Nigeria when the teams meet at 3pm on Saturday.

The sides have twice played each other at previous World Cups, and Argentina were victorious on both occasions, winning 2-1 in 1994 and claiming a 1-0 triumph in 2002.

The South Americans are expected to continue this record, and having won eight of their last nine matches, they are a side in excellent form.

Nigeria, conversely, have mustered only one victory from their last five outings, though they are also unbeaten in four games.

The Super Eagles will be hoping to qualify from Group E – they are 11/5 to be eliminated at the last 16 – but they may have to do so in spite of a probable loss to Argentina, who are favourites to win the group at 2/5.

Maradona faced widespread and constant criticism during Argentina’s tumultuous qualifying campaign, but the team seems to be generating momentum at just the right time.

With fifteen goals from their last five games, Argentina are a very tempting 2/1 to score over 2.5 goals against Nigeria.

Indeed, with Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Diego Milito scoring a combined 79 league goals for their respective clubs last season, Argentina will be formidable in attack.
