Uruguay will defeat depleted Israel in Montevideo send-off

Just as England did on Monday night, Uruguay will this evening bid farewell to their home fans at their national stadium, before they embark on their 11th World Cup campaign.

Boss Oscar Tabarez is yet to finalise his final squad, with his players still desperate to avoid being one of the three players from his provisional 26-man selection asked to stay home.

It means tonight’s game against Israel in Montevideo is the last chance for any players uncertain of a spot to make an impression, but with no further warm-up matches yet scheduled, Tabarez is unlikely to be in an experimental mood.

So expect a strong side from Uruguay, who only drew with Costa Rica here in the World Cup play-off, a result that saw them through after winning 1-0 in the first-leg, but the same cannot be said of Israel.

Despite being ranked only six places below their hosts in Fifa’s rankings, Israel are without several of their big-hitters who’ve helped them go four games unbeaten. Tal Ben-Haim, Yossi Benayoun and keeper Nir Davidovitch are out, so the home side are favourites at 4/9.

But Israel won’t simply roll over, they have a new man at the helm and will be looking to impress – Frenchman Luis Fernandez only took over in March and this is his first game in charge, so the draw at half time and home win come full time looks a good shout at 7/2.
