Froome wins another Tour, but still looks unlikely for SPOTY

Chris Froome won his fourth Tour de France at the weekend. But despite his latest staggering achievement, is unlikely to turn it into Sports Personality of the Year success.

That’s according to the latest odds, at least.

Despite becoming just the fifth man in history to win four or more Tours, Froome remains only third favourite in the SPOTY betting at 12/1.

And it’s worth noting that in each of the previous years when he has won the Tour – 2013, 2015 & 2016 – Froome has never even made the top three in the public voting for the annual accolade.

Cycling isn’t unpopular either, with Sir Chris Hoy, Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins all winning the award since 2008.

That said, Froome’s odds have been falling. He was 50/1 last month before the Tour got underway, but at 12/1 he remains the same price as he was in January.

The Kenyan-born ace isn’t without serious competition either.

Anthony Joshua remains 2/5 favourite following his sensational victory over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley.

Boxing often does well when it comes to SPOTY, with AJ bidding to become the sport’s sixth winner.

Jermain Defoe is second in the market, with his connection to the tragic story of Bradley Lowery earning him plenty of plaudits.

And Froome faces further competiton from another person who had a weekend to remember.

Anya Shrubsole’s superb display helped England win the Women’s Cricket World Cup against India at Lord’s.

The 25-year-old took a superb 6-46 to send Lord’s roaring with joy, and is now a 14/1 shot to be SPOTY’s first female winner since 2006.
