Excitement is building ahead of Doctor Who’s return to television screens on the 23rd August, with the beloved BBC series’ popularity at its peak after the fine tenures of David Tennant and Matt Smith.

The latest actor to be handed British TV’s most prestigious gig is Peter Capaldi, most famous for his role as foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It.

Unlike Tennant, Capaldi is to retain his natural Scottish accent for the role, and that fact, coupled with one or two choice lines in the first episode have led to Ladbrokes pricing up the Doctor voting for Scottish independence during series 8 at 33/1.

According to the Evening Standard, the new Doctor describes his eyebrows as so cross that “they want to cede and form an independent state”, and later suggests he will be happy to blame the English when asked what devilry is afoot.

Other special bets in honour of the Doctor include a fanciful 100/1 shout that Capaldi breaks Tom Baker’s record of most episodes as the character, which stands at 176, more than the last five actors have managed in total.

A safer pick is to back Capaldi to stick around for at least two seasons, with 4/6 odds that he retains the role for the duration of series nine. Both Smith and Tennant held the reins for three seasons.

The best value bet might be to back Doctor Who to be the top TV show this Christmas in terms of viewing figures at 5/1.

Last year it was knocked into joint-second by the execrable Mrs Brown’s Boys, but it did boast the most-watched individual moment, and with the sitcom losing some of the little freshness it had, Doctor Who could reclaim its crown.

Eastenders and Coronation Street are the traditional kings of festive viewing, but the London-based soap in particular has seen its viewing figures fall in recent Yuletide seasons.
