You have to go some way to earn the moniker ‘Nasty’ in soap land but with drug addiction, attempted murder, blackmail and a faked death just the highlights on his rap sheet Nick Cotton is a worthy holder.

Dot Cotton’s rotton son has returned to Walford after a five-year absence and has immediately been thrown into the deep end of the trouble as far as the killing of Lucy Beale is concerned.

The man who can make the greeting “Allo Ma” sound menacing has been chalked up as the 5/1 second-favourite in the Who Killed Lucy Beale? Market that has had Eastenders fans glued to their TV sets for months now.

Jane Beale has been cast into the evil stepmother role and leads the market at 9/2 but with trouble following the original Nasty Nick everywhere he goes he could be worth backing at the longer odds.

There’s nothing Cotton won’t do for money or just for the sake of being a crook and it doesn’t take too huge a leap of the imagination to picture him supplying Lucy with the ill-fated secret stash of cocaine.

Jay Brown (5/1) and the Branning sisters Lauren (5/1) and Abi (6/1) are also in the frame but none of the trio have Nick’s rotton streak.

If I were a Walford detective and Nick was back in town I know where my enquiries would begin.
