BBC comedy Mrs Brown’s Boys is expected to retain its position as the nation’s favourite show to watch on Christmas Day.
Ladbrokes has installed the show, which may have gained new fans following a feature-length film release earlier this year, as the 11/8 favourite to gain the highest average audience rating on December 25th.
The sitcom, starring Brendan O’Carroll, picked up an average of 9.4m viewers last Christmas to secure 35.23 per cent of the Christmas Day audience.
Eastenders is the 2/1 second favourite and producers will hope the rumoured death of Alfie Moon and the ongoing “who killed Lucy Beale?” saga will halt a slide in their own numbers.
The BBC soap drew in 7.8m viewers last year, down 1.6m on 2012, and after being trounced by rival Coronation Street, which attracted 8.3m people, the value could lie in Weatherfield, with Corrie available at 16/1!
Miranda Hart goes into the festive period double handed with self-titled sitcom Miranda on at 4/1.
And with Hart stating that this series will be the last there could be a clamour to watch the final moments.
However, the comedienne’s acting in Call the Midwife, could make more appeal at 10/1 after 7.1m people tuned into to the period piece last year.
Dr Who boasted an average of 8.3m last year – up from 7.6m 12 months previously – and those expecting a similar rise this year could be tempted to back Peter Capaldi and co. at 8/1.
Downton Abbey, Strictly Come Dancing, Emmerdale and of course the Queen’s Speech are also in the running but as the betting suggests, there is only one grey-haired old lady the UK’s TV fiends are looking forward to watching this Christmas!
