Charlie Hunman’s involvement in the Fifty Shades of Grey big-screen adaptation may have stalled because of his commitment to biker drama Sons of Anarchy, but fellow television star Matt Bomer is a safe bet to get fan excitement revved up again.

The 36-year-old has emerged as the bookies favourite at 7/1 to replace Hunman, who walked away from the project in order to focus on the critically-acclaimed Fox drama, which comes to an end next year.

Fortunately for fans of the erotic novel Bomer is no stranger to disrobing for the cameras, having previously showed off his taut physique in the role of reformed thief Neal Caffrey on hit US show White Collar, a part that on paper appeared to offer little room for shirtless acting.

He was even kind enough to mark the release of the fourth season of the show last week with a spot of topless beach jogging – not the sort of thing you’d imagine David Jason doing to coincide with the latest Touch of Frost DVD.

Bomer is the present favourite but he faces some competition to land the much vaunted role, with 28 Days Later star Cilian Murphy currently backed at odds of 8/1 to wear the famous grey tie.

The book’s Gothic undertones certainly appear to have played a part in the bookies’ thinking with True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard and the Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder providing plenty of bloodlust at odds of 10/1 and 8/1 respectively to land the role.

Unfortunately for fans of the super steamy tale Ryan Gosling remains something of an outsider at 16/1, while Liam Hemsworth’s Miley Cyrus-related woes and the ongoing airing of dirty laundry between the pair means he too could miss out.

Elsewhere, R-Patz’s continued association with the Twilight saga makes him an unlikely choice while the ongoing McConaissance being experienced by one-time romantic comedy schleb Matthew McConaughey could be seriously derailed should the Killer Joe star take up the role.

Ultimately you would be hard-pressed to look beyond Bomer – let’s just hope they avoid any potentially embarrassing typos in the official announcement.
