Caroline Wozniacki has been seeded number one in the Women’s draw for the US Open after Serena Williams couldn’t manage to shake-off the foot injury she’s been carrying.
Unlike the French Open which seeds players on their Grand Slam strengths or performance on a particular surface, the US Open seeds players based on their WTA ranking leaving World number two Wozniacki, seeded one but last year’s winner Kim Clijsters is seeded second.
Clijsters has picked up three WTA titles on tour this year and is 10/3 favourite to successfully defend her title leave Flushing Meadows with her third US Open championship.
Venus Williams faces a catch-22 after her sister withdrew, because whilst she now has a better chance of lifting the trophy, Venus has never managed to win a tournament her sister has failed to take part in and she is 12/1 to be victorious despite being seeded third.
Maria Sharapova is fourteenth seed because of her lack of action on the tour this year which means she’s likely to face tough matches from the third round onwards and at 7/2 is worth opposing.
Clijsters is the obvious favourite as her pedigree is proven and she looks hungry for titles since returning to the game after a two-year break but aside from the Belgium, the draw looks wide open.
An outsider to keep an eye on is Na Li who made the semi finals on the hard courts of the Australian Open and the quarter finals at Wimbledon and is a very good price at 50/1 to improve on her Australian form and win her first Major title.
Clijsters is the front runner but Na Li is the value at 50/1. See the full US Open Women’s tennis betting market here.
