Andy Murray’s defence of his US Open crown will have to wait until the night session on day three, but a commanding win should see him tucked up with a hot toddy in plenty of time.
Britain’s double Grand Slam champion has been kept waiting to begin his title defence at Flushing Meadows, though in opponent Michael Llodra, he should find no obstacle to a seamless progression.
Having gone all the way here last year the Scot’s 1/50 superiority needs no justification and a brief look at his head-to-head against the Frenchman backs that up yet further.
The count reads 3-0 to the Wimbledon champion who has only dropped one set – with two of those victories coming in the slams on hard courts – including last year’s Australian Open, their
most recent clash.
Next up is Radek Stepanek’s duel with Stanislas Wawrinka which gives the acca its juiciest price at 7/4 and, when taking into account Stepanek’s apparent hoodoo over his clay court-specialist opponent, this looks a steal. In five previous meetings the Czech player has prevailed on every occasion, with the last of those victories arriving on this surface.
Meanwhile, Bernard Tomic may have lost some of his Wimbledon swagger since shifting to hard, though plucky Brit Daniel Evans should not cause the big-serving Aussie too many problems.
Tomic has 155 places over his adversary in the ATP rankings and a wealth of slam experience to boot.
Elsewhere, 18th seed Janko Tipsarevic is bidding to make a third straight quarter final at the US Open and his path looks highly unlikely to be halted by Dudi Sela.
Tipsarevic is 3-0 against Sela, all on hard courts, including a 6-2, 6-4 stroll in Miami in March of this year, which more than justifies his 4/9 price.
Last, but by no means least, is Jurgen Melzer’s clash with little known Russian Evgeny Donskoy. Melzer’s confidence couldn’t be higher after winning the preceding Winston-Salem ATP event just a week before this tournament.
Andy Murray to beat Michael Llodra 3-0 @ 2/7
Radek Stepanek to beat Stanislav Wawrinka @ 7/4
Bernard Tomic to beat Daniel Evans @ 4/11
Janko Tipsarevic to beat Dudi Sela @ 4/9
Jurgen Melzer to beat Evgeny Donskoy @ 4/11
