Robin Soderling, a potential quarter-final opponent for Andy Murray in the US Open, has had to withdraw from this week’s competition.

The Swede is suffering from both a virus and a wrist injury and the sixth injury will play no part in the final Grand Slam of the season, heightening Murray’s chances of progressing further.

Murray has been cut in to 4/1 to win the US Open – the same price as Rafael Nadal – on the basis of his opening round victory over Somdev Devvarman and the fact he will not have to face Soderling in the quarter-final.

However, while Soderling is no doubt a danger, Murray’s most likely quarter-final opponent is now Juan Martin del Potro and while the Argentine may only be the 18th seed, the former US Open winner certainly has the game to hurt Murray.

Murray will have to negotiate his way past Robin Haase in the second round before likely ties with Feliciano Lopez and Stanislas Wawrinka in rounds three and four.

Lopez had no answers to Murray’s game in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon where he lost in straight sets, and the world number four should have no problem progressing past the Spaniard should he meet him.

Wawrinka on the other hand is a major danger to Murray’s chances and the Swiss knocked Murray out of last year’s US Open.

With del Potro and Nadal to follow Wawrinka, Murray has a very tough draw and Nadal certainly looks the better value at 4/1 to win the US Open.

Djokovic remains the 11/8 favourite but his draw isn’t as easy as Nadal’s and the Spaniard may be the better prepared should the two meet in the final.

Roger Federer is currently 6/1 to win the US Open and he has a nightmare draw with likely ties against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish await before a potential semi with Djokovic.

Looking at the draw, Nadal looks the best bet for the US Open.
