The final tennis major of the year is fast approaching, and after we took you through the three best bets for the US Open men’s outfights, the women are next on the agenda.

While the first of our picks is hardly a surprise, there’s plenty of value in also backing a couple of longer shots in a year where women’s tennis has been far from predictable.

Serena Williams @ 7/4

There has only been one season in the past seven when Williams has not won a major, and she’ll need to claim a third consecutive title at Flushing Meadows to extend that record.

Fired up by her disappointing showing at Wimbledon, Williams has won two tournaments in August already and in such form she is simply impossible to ignore even at a short price.

Although her majors record has been poor in 2014, no player has won more singles titles on the WTA tour this year with five.

Simona Halep @ 7/1

The Romanian has enjoyed a terrific year at the majors, reaching the quarters of the Australian Open, the final of the French and the semis at Wimbledon, each of those her best ever results at the tournaments.

Halep has also won two titles this year and recently rose to second in the world rankings.

Her relatively long price reflects the fact she has never beaten either of Williams or Maria Sharapova, but the 22-year-old has to end that streak sometime…right?

Sloane Stephens @ 40/1

A long-shot that is based more on the young American’s prodigious talent rather than any particular form heading into her home major, Stephens could at least provide a hedging opportunity in later rounds.

Still only 21, Stephens has already beaten Williams, Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Kirilenko in her career, and proved she can go deep into Grand Slam tournaments by making the semis in Australia and quarters at Wimbledon in 2013.

Stephens has made at least the third-round at Flushing Meadows in each of the past three seasons and could turnaround a low-key year with a good performance in front of friendly crowds.
