The fourth round of the US Open starts to through some heavyweight names together. Maria Sharapova has already left the tournament via Caroline Wozniacki’s swinging racquet and now in the men’s draw, Andy Murray faces a stern test.
We reckon, like Sharapova, the Scot will making an early exit. Read why, and our other reasons for our tips, below:
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to beat Andy Murray – 6/5
As two of the better players on tour, these two have met on a fair few occasions but curiously never on clay.
Murray has the better of his French rival on grass but on the hard courts its an even split from six meetings.
However, Tsonga has won two of their last three on this surface as well as both of their meetings this year.
In form too, Tsonga has only dropped one set on his route to this point, while Murray has needed four sets to reach this stage of the tournament.
Tommy Robredo to beat Stan Wawrinka – 7/4
Reaching the semi-final of last year’s US Open may have been the springboard for the Swiss’ Australian Open victory, but other than that Wawrinka has only been passed the fourth round in the tournament on one other occasion.
Robredo has in six of the eight clashes between the two men, and is reaching peak form and condition whereas Wawrinka’s last win came via a walkover.
Serena Williams to beat Kaia Kanepi 2-0 – 1/4
Live at this year’s US Open has been traditionally breezy for the five-time champion, winning all of her matches to this point in straight sets and only dropping 11 games so far.
Her Estonian rival hasn’t such a straightforward time of it, only winning one match 2-0 so far. Usually she’s on the receiving end of a quick defeat when she faces Williams, having never taken a set off the American in her career.
