The quarter finals of this year’s French Open are now complete, leaving Britain’s Andy Murray, tournament favourite Novak Djokovic, homegrown talent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Swiss upstart Stan Wawrinka to battle for a place in Sunday’s final.
Djokovic looked imperious against nine-time champion Rafa Nadal and remains the 1/3 market leader to take this year’s crown but who do you think will emerge victorious?
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga @ 16/1
The Frenchman looked to be cruising to victory in his quarter final meeting with Kei Nishikori, taking the first two sets 6-1, 6-4.
However, the pressure of performing in front of his home crowd soon took its toll and the Japanese ace won the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to level the match.Tsonga dug deep to take the last and celebrated by writing a message to the fans in the clay.
However, the 30-year-old has reached just one major final – the Australian Open back in 2008 – and blew his only other semi final appearance in Paris, losing in straight sets to David Ferrer in 2013.
Andy Murray @ 6/1
Murray showed in the fourth set of his victory over David Ferrer that he is almost unplayable when operating at his best.
However, he can sometimes be his own worst enemy and his mentality is called into question against the game’s biggest players. This is evidenced by his 19-8 losing head-to-head stats with Djokovic.
Tellingly the Serb has won all three of their previous meetings on clay and in the unlikely event that Murray wins here he could well be burnt out for whoever he might meet in the final.
Stan Wawrinka @ 5/1
Stan the man seems to have removed any doubt as to who is Switzerland’s current best after breezing past Roger Federer in straight sets.
He may trail Tsonga, his semi final opponent, 4-3 head-to-head but his 2-1 victory over the Frenchman on clay last year and 3-1 win in last year’s Davis Cup make him a firm favourite to reach the final.
Just three wins from 23 meetings with Djokovic and a losing head-to-head with Murray though means he’ll have his work cut out if he gets there.
Novak Djokovic @ 1/3
Fast on his way to becoming, and for some already, the best ever, Djokovic looks unbeatable at present.
The Serb has beaten all three remaining rivals on numerous occasions and made light work of Nadal in the last round.
Murray has won one of their last eight meetings so the Serb will fancy his chances of making the final to keep his hopes of a calendar slam alive.
