French Open Day 9: Murray and Williams take our limelight

The men’s and women’s draws for the 2015 French Open couldn’t be more contrasting after eight days of competition.

While the majority of the men’s top seeds are all currently still alive and kicking in the competition, the women’s section is seemingly wide open as only five of the top 10 remain.

As the competition moves into its ninth day of action, we try to blend the men’s assuredness with the helter skelter nature of the women’s competition with our three best bets:

Andy Murray to beat Jeremy Chardy 3-0 @ 8/13

Beyond a one-set scare against Portuguese player Joao Sousa in the second round, Murray has looked comfortable and confident in reaching the fourth stage of the tournament.

A straight-sets victory against Australian Nick Kyrgios in the previous match sets up a clash with Frenchman Chardy for the eighth time in the pair’s career.

The Scot has won six of the previous seven the duo have played, with the most recent coming this year with a straight-sets victory on clay in Rome.

Julia Goerges to beat Sara Errani @ 13/8

Although the betting makes the Italian the favourite to prevail, the head-to-head matchups paint a far more even picture, with the pair sharing their four previous meetings.

Goerges has been the most recent winner in the duel, triumphing in two sets at the Australian Open last year and has been no stranger to shocks in Paris so far.

The 26-year-old dumped out Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets in the second round and dropped just five games against American Irina Falconi last time out.

Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens to contest three sets @ 5/2

This hasn’t been the kind of coasting, all-too-easy Grand Slam appearance that has become customary for Williams in the latter half of her career.

The world number one has dropped a set in each of her last two games at Roland Garros, most recently against Victoria Azarenka and could well keep that streak alive against her compatriot.

Stephens has already troubled the Williams family this week after knocking out Venus in the opening round and has yet to drop a set to this point.
