Were it not for the resurgence of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic would be the world number two and the in-form player in men’s tennis right now.

Since losing in the US Open final to Rafael Nadal, Djokovic has reached two finals and two semi-finals in five ranking events, and has steered his country to a Davis Cup success over France.

The 2008 Australian Open winner is 6/1 in the Australian Open betting to win the tournament – frankly a ridiculous price considering he is the same price as Andy Murray.

Murray is yet to win a Grand Slam tournament and has been in awful form since being knocked out in the third round of the US Open – reaching just one final and one semi-final in the five ATP ranking tournaments since the US Open.

Rafael Nadal (2/1 to win) and Federer (7/4) are the two men to beat in Melbourne over the next fortnight, but Nadal’s weakness is the hard court surface and Djokovic beat Federer in the semi-final on his way to the 2008 title.

Djokovic should be around a 9/2 shot for the Australian Open and should not be behind Murray in the Australian Open betting market and punters should take the price before Djokovic starts to reach the latter stages.

The Serb is a notoriously bad starter in Grand Slam tournaments and may battle through a couple of four-set or five-set wins before he finds top gear, but last year Djokovic made one final, one semi-final and two quarter-finals in the four Grand Slams and can’t be ruled out this year.

Patriotic punters may want to believe that Murray will advance further than the Serb, but in reality Djokovic is the better player and offers all the value whilst at the same Australian Open odds as Murray.

A £25 stake on Djokovic winning the Australian Open would return £175. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
