After losing to Andy Murray in the Shanghai Masters a fortnight ago, Federer announced that he was looking to end the season on a high and a win in the first of four remaining tournaments means it’s looking ominous for the opposition.

The IF Stockholm Open didn’t boast the quality of the Shanghai Masters and Robin Soderling’s semi-final exit made it all the more easier for Federer to triumph, but Federer still backed up his comments with a quality of tennis that reminded his critics just what he is capable of.

According to the betting markets, Federer has all but been ruled out of a grand slam triumph in 2011 with 1/1 available for Federer winning no grand slams in 2011, and 6/4 available that he wins exactly one.

But Florian Mayer can vouch for Federer’s ability after being blown away by the Swiss star, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Stockholm Open on Sunday night.

And Federer will prove difficult to stop in his final three tournaments, in Switzerland, Paris and London, as the ATP Tour season draws to an end.

After regaining the world number two spot from Novak Djokovic, Federer is determined to become world number one again and whilst that isn’t possible this year, a victory in the first grand slam event of the year, the Australian Open, would see him overtake Rafael Nadal.

Federer is 3/1 to regain his Australian open title at the end of January, and after equalling Pete Sampras’ haul of 64 ATP titles, Federer best days are certainly not past him making the encounters between him and Nadal next year an exciting prospect.

Meanwhile the ATP tour moves to France, Russia and Austria this week with Mikhail Youzhny the 3/1 favourite to triumph at the St Petersburg Open, Gael Monfils the 4/1 favourite to win the Open Sud de France and Jurgen Melzer 5/2 to triumph in Austria.

Rafael Nadal is 3/1 to win three grand slams next year. See the full Tennis betting odds market here.
