Whatever happened on the field, this was set to be a day of celebration for Rangers fans with the Ladbrokes Championship trophy being presented at Ibrox.

Nobody told Alloa’s Michael Duffy though, and the Northern Irish winger opened the scoring in the ninth minute, stealing the ball from the ‘Gers backline and producing a lovely finish to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Andy Halliday set up James Tavernier for the defender’s 15th goal of the season, a record for a Rangers full-back.

The ex-Bristol City man converted through a deft header from close range, marking yet another crucial contribution from the defender whose omission from the Championship Player of the Year nominees list has surprised many.

Billy King and Liam Burt both had opportunities to clinch victory for the home side, but Wasps ‘keeper Scott Gallacher was in inspired form, helping his side to cling on for an impressive point.

For the hosts, the dream of a finishing season unbeaten Ibrox is still alive.

Alloa, however, will be the happier with this scoreline, having become only the second away side to leave here with a point during this Ladbrokes Championship campaign.

Jack Ross’ men are now unbeaten in four games, a run which will surely boost confidence ahead of their bid to return to this level at the first time of asking. Rangers, meanwhile, are preparing for life in the top-flight.

The ‘Gers are next in action at Livingston tomorrow night, with Mark Warburton’s men 1/4 to win and Livi 9/1 to taste victory.

However, the smart money looks to be on a share of the spoils (5/1) with the Light Blues having drawn on three of their last four visits to Livingston.
