Motherwell to win the 16-17 Ladbrokes Premiership

With the start of the Ladbrokes Premiership just one month away, Motherwell boss Mark McGhee and his scouting network have been scouring the lower leagues of English football and hand-picking the gems they feel can help them push on and improve on their fifth-placed finish last season.

Speaking to the official Motherwell website about his plans for the remainder of the transfer window, McGhee said:

“In terms of our recruitment, we would still like to bring in one more central midfielder and have a specific target in mind.”

Much of the emphasis in the transfer market has been placed on adding strength to a defence which leaked 63 goals last campaign.

Acting quickly, McGhee has added ex-Chester centre-half Ben Heneghan, who seems a coup given the interest he attracted from several Championship clubs.

At 6ft 4in, the 22-year-old also has a goal or two in him, netting six times in two seasons in the National League.

Versatile 23-year-old Carl McHugh has also signed for Well. McHugh was instrumental in Plymouth Argyle’s promotion push last season, and is likely to play an equally key role in Motherwell’s season.

Meanwhile, returning for another season is ex-Middlesbrough striker Scott MacDonald, who has opted to stay put following interest from Hibernian.

Ex-Grimsby Town right-back Richard Tait, who recently won promotion to League Two with his former side, has joined up with The Steelmen along with ex-Leicester City forward Jacob Blyth.

Though Blyth played no part in The Foxes’ incredible title win, being around such players on a day-to-day basis will have only been of benefit to the 23-year old.

If Motherwell are to push on for a European spot this season, they’ll need their new boys to impress from the first whistle.

McGhee’s side travel to Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season, and are 8/5 to get their campaign off to a winning start.
