Dundee striker Kane Hemmings has been rewarded for his sparkling form by bagging the Ladbrokes Premiership Player of the Month award for January.
The Dees hitman scored three important goals in the league last month including a derby day equaliser in the 2-1 win over Dundee United, the opener in a 4-2 away win over Partick and an 88th-minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Motherwell.
Hemmings also bagged a brace in 2-1 cup win over Falkirk but it was his league form that earned him the gong and the former Cowdenbeath and Rangers man now believes a top six finish is well within the Dark Blues’ grasp.
“We want to cement our place in the top six and go as far as we can in the cup. We’re not too far off the top four but it is a tough league so anything above a top six finish would be a bonus,” he said.
Hemmings singled out the derby day goal as perhaps the most important of his January strikes and after surpassing his manager’s target of 15 goals for the season the 23-year-old is hoping to bag as many as possible to make the form of his career count.
“The last few months have been great but it’s not all down to me it’s all about playing with good players who created chances, in those situations I’ll always back myself to finish,” he added.
“I feel like this is the best I’ve been playing in my career so far. The Premiership is a different kettle of fish and while I’ve always had belief I could do it at the top level it’s great to have been given a chance to come and play football and show what I can do.”
Dundee are next in action at home to St Johnstone and odds of 6/4 suggest the Dark Blues can put the Saints to the sword to enhance their top six credentials.
Walk away with three points again and the chances are the latest Ladbrokes Premiership Player of the Month will have had a big hand in earning the victory.
