After a superb 3-1 Scottish League Cup semi-final victory over Celtic, Ross County took another step to becoming regular big-time players in the Ladbrokes SPFL with a deadline day signing.

The Staggies moved sharply to acquire David Goodwillie on loan from Aberdeen for the rest of the season, and his arrival is a strong statement from the Highland side.

Currently sitting fourth in the Ladbrokes Premiership with just nine games to go before the split, plus a League Cup Final at Hampden against Championship side Hibernian, County could be on for their best-ever campaign.

Boss Jim McIntyre was quick to recognise how far his side have come in recent years, as indicated by their deadline day deal for the former Blackburn Rovers striker.

“I think it’s a fabulous signing and shows that we can attract a player of David’s calibre.

“A couple of years ago I don’t think a player such as David would have come to Ross County,” the Scot added.

“That tells us we’re doing a lot of things well and how people perceive our club now.”

Goodwillie has struggled to hold down a first-team place under Derek McInnes at Pittodrie this season, but he should find regular football at Dingwall.

McIntyre believes the forward can still produce the goods.

“He’s played for Scotland and that shows what David is capable of. If he can get back to scoring goals regularly he can kick on.”

“There will be an opportunity for him at some stage to grab that jersey here and the rest will be up to him.”

“We’ve got good options in attack just now and he enhances that further,” the Staggies manager said.

One of those options for McIntyre has been Craig Curran, who’s netted seven goals in 19 league games this term.

Curran has struggled to overcome a concussion sustained earlier in the campaign however, and Goodwillie’s arrival hands County some extra depth ahead of the crunch part of the season.
