News of a James McCarthy move away from Goodison Park broke earlier this afternoon, but over the last few hours no clubs have managed to tie up a deal for the energetic midfielder. However, there’s still enough time for the 25-year-old to seal a move away from Merseyside, with both West Brom and Crystal Palace interested.
But perhaps the side in pole position to secure McCarthy’s services is north of the boarder, with Celtic reportedly keen on bringing the Republic of Ireland international to Parkhead.
McCarthy is gradually falling down the pecking order at Everton, and the arrival of Ronald Koeman has only dented his first team chances further – and the Toffees are now favourites to land Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle following a late flurry of bets.
So does that open the door for a long-awaited return to the Ladbrokes Premiership?
Our traders seem to think so, and the extra hour Celtic will have to tie up a deal for the midfielder means the odds of him joining the Bhoys have fallen to just 5/2.
McCarthy has represented the Toffees on 93 occasions in the league since his arrival back in 2013, but competition for places at Goodison Park – combined with the prospect of playing Champions League football under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic means this may be an offer that’s too good to turn down.
We’ll be monitoring any developments on this one as Rodgers looks to make his seventh signing as boss.
