Love Your Club: Steven Black – Annan Athletic

Having grown up in Dumfries, Annan centre back Steven Black certainly feels at home at Galabank.

The 23-year-old started his career at Queen of the South and came to Athletic via Gretna but it seems the defender is relishing the chance to be seen as a local boy done good.

Here he tells Ladbrokes News why he loves his club…

Why do you love Annan Athletic?

I started out playing youth football in Dumfries as really young lad and being a local boy means the fans are great to me so it’s brilliant being here.

Describe the fans and what they mean to the club

The fans can pick you up when you’re struggling or when the other team is on top in a way that is different to anything or anyone else. They are brilliant fans and we really appreciate their support.

What’s the vibe like in the dressing room?

The vibe is very good. We’re a close group of boys. We listen to a lot of dance music on match days. Peter Weatherson is a more experienced head and he knows how to get the boys up for it and inspire us all but he also keep the nerves calm.

Walking out onto the pitch is brilliant especially at home where we have a lot of young fans who sing their wee songs which is great.

Can you name an Annan Athletic Backroom Hero?

We’ve got a few to be fair. Billy Bentley, Terry the kitman, Karen, Carrie-Anne and David they do a huge amount for the club. We’d struggle without them and have to rely on ourselves and the manager if they weren’t there. They enable us to just focus on training and playing which is fantastic.

What do you love most about being an Annan Athletic footballer?

It’s simple really. Playing every Saturday and getting recognition for playing for the club is great.
