It’s been a case of ‘so close, yet so far’ for Stranraer in the last three seasons. The Blues have finished in the play-off spots three years running, but have narrowly missed out on promotion to the Scottish Championship each time.
After an early-season wobble this time out, the Blues are beginning to shine in Ladbrokes League 1, with their settled backline thwarting quality opposition, while their pace and clinical finishing on the counter-attack has caused problems for a number of opponents.
That ruthless streak on the breakaway was in evidence again during Stranraer’s last home game, against Albion Rovers. The first two goals in the Blues’ 3-2 win saw Brian Reid’s men break down their opponents in the middle of the park and surge forward, with pacy winger Craig Thomson netting both neatly.
Despite taking their foot off the gas in that game and conceding two late goals, the Stair Park outfit have been very solid at the back in recent weeks.
In the 2-0 victory at Queen’s Park on Saturday, Stranraer limited their opponents to just four shots, notching up a third clean sheet in five games in all competitions.
And chances are we’ll see many more sides struggle to create anything of note against the Blues, whose trio of Scott Robertson, Liam Dick and David Barron have created a superb understanding, while Giuliano Morena has been a classy and combative presence in defensive midfield.
The confident Blues have also proven they’re a match for anyone right now. Their 1-0 Challenge Cup triumph over Dumbarton earlier this month saw the League 1 outfit dominate the Championship stalwarts.
That confidence and quality sets Stranraer in good stead for this weekend’s meeting with high-flying Brechin, with the Blues appealingly priced at 23/20 for victory.
Meanwhile, with Reid’s charges continuing to improve week on week, now is the time to back them at 10/1 to win the Ladbrokes Championship and finally secure that long-overdue promotion.
