The longer the Ladbrokes League 1 season goes on, the more it looks like a straight two-horse race between Dunfermline and Ayr United.
The Pars continued their excellent campaign with another comprehensive victory on Saturday, this time Forfar were the victims.
Goals from Joe Cardle, David Hopkirk and a brace from Ryan Wallace now mean that Allan Johnstone’s men have scored 10 in their last three league matches without reply.
They remain 1/5 shots to lift the trophy in May, but although the odds suggest otherwise, Ayr aren’t far behind.
The Honest Men have now gone 10 games without defeat after running out 1-0 winners over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview.
Ross Caldwell’s strike inside 10 minutes may have been the only time the net bulged, but United’s dominance of the match was assured.
At the bottom of the table, Cowdenbeath secured a much-needed three points with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Stranraer.
The victory now means the Blue Brazil are just one point behind both Saturday’s opponents and Stenhousemuir, as they bid to avoid back-to-back relegations.
That result meant that basement club Brechin City could really have done with taking something from their game against Albion Rovers.
That wasn’t to be though as Paul Willis gave the visitors the win with the only goal of the game at Glebe Park with his first goal for the club.
Defeat now means that City are 1/3 odds to drop into League 2 next term, and unless they turn it around soon, a slip back to the depths of the SPFL looks in store.
The final fixture in the division saw Peterhead end their slump of seven games without a defeat by picking up three points in a 2-0 success over Airdrieonians.
They have now closed the gap to the top four to two points and find themselves 10/1 shots to be playing in the Ladbrokes Championship next year, more than likely via the play-offs.
For the Diamonds, the defeat means they have won just one match – against 10th placed Brechin – in their last five, and could yet see their grip on a top four spot slip away.
