St Mirren to win Championship: 2016-17

St Mirren boss Alex Rae has been gradually reviving the side’s fortunes, following a difficult start to last season’s Ladbrokes Championship campaign under former boss Ian Murray. And there’s every reason to believe the Buddies will improve on their sixth-placed finish this time out, following some savvy summer buys.

Rae has snapped up a number of talented new recruits, all with plenty of experience in the Scottish game. While the standout buy is the returning John Sutton, who netted 22 Premiership goals at Motherwell in 2013-14, there’s plenty of other arrivals who could well impress.

Former Rangers midfielder Kyle Hutton has joined the Paisley outfit following an impressive season at Queen of the South, and is sure to add some steel to the Buddies’ play, while former Scotland international David Clarkson will add a touch of flair up front, following his arrival from Motherwell.

Imposing defender Gary Mackenzie will give Rae’s men an extra aerial presence, and the 30-year-old has developed as a player in his six years south of the border.

Finally, two of the bright sparks for last season’s relegated sides Livingston and Alloa Athletic have signed up for another year in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Keeper Scott Gallacher moves to the St Mirren stadium having helped the Wasps produce a late-season upturn in form, while imposing centre-back Ben Gordon is likely to partner Mackenzie to form one of the league’s most robust defensive pairings.

And with talents like Gary Irvine and Rocco Quinn still on the Buddies’ books as we head towards the new season, they look set managed to hold onto many of their best performers from last season.

It’s 12/1 that the Paisley club win next season’s Ladbrokes Championship title, and if they can manage to beat the likes of Hibernian and Dundee United to top spot, Rae’s transfer business will surely have been the key factor.
