The appointment of Alex Rae seems to have breathed a new lease of life into St Mirren this season, and now it appears that the sky is the limit.

The club underwent a disastrous opening few months to the season in which they won just two of their opening 16 games and faced the possibility of a relegation dog-fight, culminating in the departure of Ian Murray.

But since the former Dundee boss has been in the dugout things have started to look up for the Buddies.

Their 1-0 victory over Dumbarton on Saturday was their third win on the bounce in front of their own fans, having only won once at St Mirren Park all season prior to that.

In total, the Paisley outfit have won five of their eight Ladbrokes Championship matches since Rae took charge, as many league victories as they achieved in the previous nine months (26 games).

Goalscorer last weekend Lawrence Shankland has even given the team’s faithful something to dream about with his latest comments.

Speaking after the match the 20-year-old hinted that promotion might not be completely out of the question.

“We are having a chat about the promotion play-offs in the dressing room as we have an ambitious squad with good players,” he said.

“Now we have recorded three straight home wins so we are looking to build on that and see where it takes us.”

After their recent upturn in form St Mirren find themselves just five points behind Raith Rovers in the final play-off position, a spot that looks likely to be one that is hard fought for in the coming weeks.

The aforementioned duo, along with Queen of the South and Greenock Morton look set to try to make four go into one with the leading three far clear of the rest.

If St Mirren continue in the form they have been in though – they have accrued more points in 2016 than all but Rangers and Hibernian – then a play-off spot isn’t out of the question.
