The Snooker circuit returns to British shores this week, with the world’s best cuesmiths heading to Preston for the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix.

It’s set to be a fine few days on the baize, with Ronnie O’Sullivan leading the betting at 4/1.

The Rocket heads to Lancashire after a consummate performance to claim last month’s Masters.

In the process, the Essex-born star reminded us all that when he’s on form, the rest have no hope.

But, should O’Sullivan come unstuck at the Guild Hall over the next few days – as he did at the German Masters – who is best placed to capitalise?

The betting suggests Mark Selby is the most likely challenger at 9/2, and the world number one heads to Preston with double the ranking points of anyone else.

Selby has already claimed three ranking events this season, and those who back the Leicestershire hotshot should be enjoying a long run in the north-west.

But the smart money may be on a trio of more experienced regulars.

John Higgins is enjoying something of an Indian summer, and the 41-year-old Scot is 10/1 to win this week.

Higgins has bagged two non-rankings tournaments already this season, and reached the final of the Scottish Open before Christmas.

And plenty will be fancying the man who beat Higgins that day, Marco Fu.

The Hong Kong ace is a tempting 20/1, and has backed up his Scottish Open victory with a semi-final run at both the Masters and UK Championship this season.

Finally, if you believe the quip ‘You’re only as good as your last tournament’ then 80/1 shot Anthony Hamilton is your man.

After 26 years on the tour, the popular Nottingham potter finally acquired a rankings title with a fine performance at the German Masters.

A semi-final run in the Northern Ireland Open this season also adds weight to the notion that Hamilton is in fine fettle at the ripe old age of 45.
