Rugby World Cup top try scorer: “The Bus” will take some stopping

The 2015 Rugby World Cup is preparing for lift off at Twickenham and that means Ladbrokes customers should be stocking up on ale, reading the rules of rugby union in some cases and most importantly, drawing up a betting shortlist for the tournament.

Just days before England and Fiji raise the curtain, guessing the identity of the tournament’s leading try scorer is not going to be easy, but for the eighth edition of the Rugby World Cup there is the unusual presence of a strong favourite.

Four years ago England full-back Chris Ashton was crowned as a fairly surprise top try scorer, alongside Vincent Clerc of France, given the Red Rose weren’t among the favourites as their quarter-final exit proved.

But while neither man will be lining up for their nation one World Cup-cycle on, it’s a debutant on the biggest stage who has tongues wagging and could yet have pockets swelling.

Lining up for world champions New Zealand is winger Julian Savea, who, at 6ft 4” and weighing 17st has understandably drawn comparisons to legendary All-Black battering ram Jonah Lomu – being dubbed “the Bus.”

Savea is also of Pacific Island descent, but Tongan rather than Samoan, and has racked up an incredible tally of 30 All-Black tries in just 33 Tests since debuting the year after his country had picked up their second world title in 2011.

Such a hoard of line-breaking scores has shot Savea to the apex of the betting at 5/1 to follow in Lomu’s earth-trembling footsteps from 1995 and win the top try scorer gong.

Savea plays for Super Rugby regular season champions Hurricanes and has forged a reputation as the fiercest finisher in international rugby ahead of the World Cup.

England fans will be only too aware of this prowess, when Savea went over for a hat-trick of tries in Hamilton last June.

This is one bus Ladbrokes customers don’t want to miss…
