But for a controversial last-gasp score from Australia, Scotland could quite realistically have reached last Autumn’s World Cup final, but nevertheless the Scots should be seriously considered for Six Nations glory.
As injuries hampered Wales at every turn, England limped from game to game, and Ireland came unstuck against a rampant Argentina, Scotland had Australia on the ropes in their last-eight clash.
Vern Cotter’s side have had a couple of months to digest that heart-wrenching late try from the Wallabies, and there’s every reason they could compete at the right end of this year’s Six Nations.
Scotland have never won the tournament since Italy joined in 2000, claiming the last ever Five Nations title in 1999.
But now inspired from their World Cup story, the Scots could be set for their best chance of European glory in over 15 years.
And Ladbrokes are going all out ahead of the annual springtime festival by offering a huge 20/1 on Scotland to win the tournament for a limited time only.*
The Tartan Army will open their campaign by welcoming England to Murrayfield, and the hosts are 15/8 to win the contest and claim the Calcutta Cup.
Trips to Cardiff and Rome follow, before France head to Edinburgh, and Scotland will close out their quest for success with a trip to Dublin on March 19.
Victory against England could set the Scots up nicely, and they’ll be desperate to avenge their dismal 2015 contest where they lost every game.
The World Cup also showed the Scots could keep a lid on their emotions, and that’s something many within the squad have spoken of in the run-up to this year’s Six Nations.
If Cotter can find that balance of emotion in his side, there’s a real chance for the Tartan Army to do rather well this spring in what could be a very open tournament.
