Wales’ two games so far have highlighted all that is good and bad about Welsh rugby.
Against England they were wasteful in possession and made far too many poor decisions to trouble Martin Johnson’s men, while in their convincing win against Scotland Wales showed flashes of the brilliance that brought them two Grand Slams in the last decade.
Italy will be an altogether tougher test than the Scots though, with the Azzurri showing in their narrow 13-11 defeat against Ireland that no side can travel to Stadio Flaminio and expect an easy game.
In fact, in the last three Six Nations games that have been played in Rome, no side has managed to score over 20 points, while Wales have endured some torrid times in the Italian capital in recent years.
They lost 23-20 in 2007 and came through a tough game 20-15 two years later. Everything is pointing towards another tight game this time around.
Wales will be looking to get quick ball to exploit the lack of quality in the Italian backline, so a good performance from the Welsh pack will be vital to their chances.
With Ryan Jones looking revitalised in his performances so far and Shane Williams reminding everyone of his class with a strong showing against Scotland, Wales should have too much for the Italians. It will be close though.
Backing Italy to win at +12 in the handicap betting at 8/11 looks to be well worth a bet.
