While Cheltenham Festival produced some unforgettable races and endless drama, it’s fair to say that one Ladbrokes customer enjoyed the final day more than most, thanks to a Lucky 31 bet at £1 a selection each-way, which produced an incredible £251,384 win.
The 67-year-old factory worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, backed Arctic Fire in the County Hurdle at 22/1, Penhill in the Albert Bartlett at 14/1, Pacha Du Polder in the Foxhunter at 22/1, and Champagne Classic in the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at 25/1.
And the savvy punter could have gone on to notch up a million-pound win had Dodging Bullets won the final race of the festival. But our customer was utterly delighted with the winnings he chalked up.
He told Ladbrokes: “I love my racing and always like to have a bet during the Cheltenham Festival. I don’t bet much, but when I do, it’s always on outsiders and each-way as well. I was watching the racing in my local Ladbrokes shop and when I realised that my bet could come in, I couldn’t stand to watch anymore so I left.”
But when Champagne Classic crossed the line in the day’s penultimate race, the windfall of this plucky punter’s dreams was secured.
Our wise winner continued: “As soon as I realised that I won this amount of money, I was ecstatic, but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet, my heart is still pounding. My wife has always wanted a bungalow and now we can buy one and make the dream happen.”
Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “In a week where bookmakers emerged as the winners, this one punter made sure we didn’t get away scot-free. However, after making some incredible predictions, we couldn’t be happier to pay the winnings to a lifelong racing fan.”
