Lionel Messi will finally wrestle the title of world’s best footballer back from Cristiano Ronaldo when the 2015 Ballon d’Or winner is announced, according to a recent poll.
Upon learning of the shortlist earlier today Ladbrokes News asked readers to vote for who they think is the most deserving player and with a staggering 51 per cent of the total vote the diminutive Barcelona man was the clear favourite to add to his four titles.
Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo, a three time winner and the current holder, was second in the voting and with just 23 per cent of the readers opting for the former Manchester United man, punters may choose to eschew odds of 5/1.
Completing the top three, in terms of the betting and votes, was current goal machine and Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish hitman has smashed 15 goals in his last seven games and can be backed to break the Messi-Ronaldo stranglehold at 14/1.
However, just nine per cent of voters believe the 27-year-old can walk away with the coveted trophy.
There was little support for the remaining big names on our list of selections with Juventus midfield powerhouse Paul Pogba (four per cent), Manchester City goal machine Sergio Aguero (three per cent) and Messi’s Barca teammates Neymar (three per cent) and Luis Suarez (one per cent) accounting for just 11 per cent of the votes between them.
The remaining six per cent of voters believe someone other than the players named in this article will pick up the accolade and with that in mind a cheeky punt on Andres Iniesta, Gareth Bale or Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be worthwhile, with each man priced at long odds of 100/1.
