Both Liverpool and Everton remain prospects to lift the season’s first piece of silverware but it seems fans of both clubs would rather finish in the top four than claim the Capital One Cup.
That is the suggestion of the latest poll from Ladbrokes News which asked readers to have their say on whether or not a League Cup win would make up for finishing outside the Champions League places.
Somewhat surprising, and perhaps cementing the belief of Arsene Wenger, the majority of people (56 per cent) said ‘no’ the League Cup is not adequate compensation for missing out on the Premier League’s top four.
However, some of the more realistic football fans out there (44 per cent to be exact) claim that cup glory – even of the League Cup variety – should trump securing a place in the second round of Champions League qualification.
Here in the Ladbrokes news office we’re of the belief that it depends which club you support. With Liverpool fans firmly believing their place at the top of the football pyramid should be a given, not to mention they possess one of the best managers in the business and an expensively-assembled squad, then qualification for Europe’s top tournament might well be more enticing.
However, Everton fans, who have seen their side qualify for the Champions league just once in the last 20 seasons, would probably quite fancy a day out at Wembley and a victory at their Merseyside rivals’ expense.
The Toffees attempt to join their neighbours in the final when defending a 2-1 lead over Manchester City tonight.
At odds of 9/2 to win on the nigh it appears they have their work cut out. Spring a surprise though and Bluenoses will dreaming of a Wembley triumph.
