Arsene Wenger has been the biggest rival of Jose Mourinho’s managerial career. At least that’s the view of 33 per cent of today’s voters, as we gave our followers the choice of the Arsenal boss, Pep Guardiola, Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez.
Of those four bosses, Wenger is the only one never to have beaten Mourinho in a competitive match, even though he’s had 13 chances to do so in the past.
Perhaps this vote may have been influenced by comments that have recently emerged in the wake of Mourinho’s new autobiography, in which he said “I will find him one day outside a football pitch and I will break his face”.
Ever the attention seeker, this has been viewed by many as a desperate attempt by Mourinho to draw any attention away from Wenger, who this week celebrated 20 years to the day since he took over at Arsenal.
It’s no surprise that this was one of the closest polls we’ve ran in the last few weeks, given the number of high profile clashes Mourinho has been involved with in the past.
Guardiola, who finished in second-place with 31 per cent of the votes, headed the poll for most of the day on @Ladbrokes. And he’s the only manager of the chosen four that has the upper hand over the Man United boss, with eight wins to Jose’s three from a previous 18 meetings.
And one of those wins came just two weeks ago, in the pair’s first ever Manchester Derby, of which Guardiola’s City side won 2-1. However, the EFL Cup draw has presented Mourinho with the opportunity to get his revenge in just a month’s time.
Elsewhere, Fergie was close behind in third-place with 25 per cent of the vote, with Mourinho having always admired the former Red Devils manager’s achievements, while Rafa Benitez was some way off in fourth-place with 11 per cent.
