Colin Hendry probably won’t have voted for it but Paul Gascoigne’s sublime goal against Scotland has been named your favourite moment in European Championship history.

Gazza’s iconic strike at Euro 96 took 47 per cent of the vote in our latest Twitter poll, beating off competition from the likes of Marco van Basten, David Trezeguet and the entire Greece national team.

Even in such exulted company, the England legend couldn’t be bested with Van Basten and Greece’s Euro 2004 triumph finishing as the joint runners-up on 21 per cent.

Despite his best efforts, Trezeguet’s Golden Goal against Italy in the Euro 2000 final could only garner 11 per cent of the vote by the time polling closed.

The end result is perhaps no surprise given the status afforded to England’s heroics at Euro 96 and the wave of nostalgia for that particular tournament.

Already leading 1-0 on that sweltering June afternoon 20 years ago, Three Lions defender Tony Adams conceded a penalty which was duly saved by David Seaman.

And just moments later Gazza produced arguably his most famous bit of magic, chipping the ball over Hendry’s head before dispatching the ball past a helpless Andy Goram to secure a priceless victory against the Tartan Army.

The rest, as they say is history, and a pretty fine piece at that according to our Twitter followers.

England are 19/20 to beat Russia tomorrow night with the draw priced at 12/5 and Leonid Slutsky’s outfit the 19/5 outsiders.
