Christian Benteke endured an evening to forget last night as Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup in extra time to West Ham, and the forward is a world away from being an Anfield legend.
The £32.5m man from Aston Villa has netted just seven times for the Reds, and fans were less than impressed by his performance at Upton Park last night.
Every club has had their signings who didn’t work out, and Liverpool are no different, so Ladbrokes asked their Twitter followers to vote for Anfield’s worst striker.
We offered up Benteke, misbehaving Mario Balotelli – still technically a Liverpool player – £35m flop Andy Carroll and Gerard Houiller’s ‘I’d rather pretend that never happened’ signing El Hadji Diouf (David N’Gog can breathe a sigh of relief).
It proved a popular question and it was Diouf who stormed to victory (or should that be defeat?) with 36 per cent of the votes.
The Senegalese striker scored nine times in his first season with the Reds, but in his second campaign at Anfield became their first number nine in history to not register a single goal.
A tempestuous attitude and poor discipline record ensured Diouf’s time with Anfield would rather be forgotten by all.
In second place came firework-loving Balotelli with 32 per cent of the vote. Signed by Brendan Rodgers in a bid to replace Luis Suarez (yep, we still can’t figure that one out), the Italian scored just four times in the 2014-15 campaign, and is now on loan at AC Milan.
Andy Carroll came home third with 20 per cent, with the £35m January window signing netting just 11 times in nearly 60 appearances.
And that left Benteke with 12 per cent of today’s vote, suggesting he can still avoid being placed in the same bracket as Diouf if he can find some form.
Hurry up though Christian…
