Andy Murray to win BBC SPOTY

As living British sporting greats go it’s a pretty hard job to choose the best of the best and select one definitive figure who stands head and shoulders above them all.

Nevertheless, we handed it over to social media to decide who tops the pile, and it looks as though Sir Anthony McCoy can add another award to his personal achievements.

The 20 time winning Champion jockey just edged our poll, amassing 29 per cent of the vote, while Andy Murrary sits in second place, just ahead of Sir Steve Redgrave in third, Lennox Lewis completes our shortlist with 19 per cent of the vote.

In a professional career spanning over 20 years, A. P. McCoy won pretty much everything there is to win in horse racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle and the Grand National to name but three.

Such success resulted in McCoy receiving recognition from the Queen in the form of a knighthood earlier this year for his services to horse racing.

After much debate, we opted for Sir Steve Redgrave to represent the knighted Olympians in our shortlist over Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Bradley Wiggins, while Lennox Lewis and Andy Murray remain the most decorated British living sportsmen in each of their respected fields.

McCoy also remains the only jockey to ever receive the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the year award, pipping Phil Taylor to the post in 2010.

Some of the names that didn’t make the list, much to the surprise of Social Media, include Phil Taylor, Rory McIlroy, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Lewis Hamilton, Ian Bell and Jamie Vardy.
