The last Budget before the General Election is almost upon us, so Ladbrokes have priced up their latest range of Buzzword Bingo bets for the occasion, alongside other novelty punts such as 16/1 about former Chancellor of the Exchequer Ken Clarke being caught asleep on camera.
While nobody should be put off the 74-year-old Westminster maverick’s narcoleptic bouts, there could be some serious money to be made from George Osborne’s mutterings.
With payouts dependent on what Osborne says exactly, the best bet must be the one-word ‘Election’ at 1/2; it seems impossible he’ll be able to avoid it with the big day coming up so soon.
Both ‘Tough Decisions’ and ‘Hard Choices’ should be on the menu at 6/4 and 2/1, with the three main UK-wide parties all likely to carry on cutting spending for the foreseeable future.
At a bigger price, 6/1 about ‘Labour’s Economic Mess’ being uttered looks tremendous value considering Osborne’s and Prime Minister David Cameron’s constant use of such tactics since they took power in 2010.
‘Pre-election Giveaway’ at 33/1 also looks decent by that rationale, as the heir to the baronetcy of Ballentaylor, County Tipperary, may have two reasons to use the phrase.
Osborne told Andrew Marr there would be ‘no giveaways’ on Sunday, and could possibly play politics by showing contrast between his final spending review and pre-election Budgets produced by Labour governments between 1997-2010.
