The Liberal Democrats have been heavily backed to continue their resurgence in the Stoke-On-Trent Central by-election, according to the latest odds.

Within minutes of the news breaking of Labour MP Tristram Hunt’s resignation, the Lib Dems tumbled from 50/1.

And the party is now a 8/1 shot following a rush of bets, hot on the heels of a resounding council by-election victory in Sunderland this week.

Labour remain 8/13 favourites to hold the seat, but that still represents a huge shift from the 1/50 offered for a Tristram Hunt victory two years ago.

UKIP are the clear second favourites in the betting at 5/2, leaving the Tories out at 8/1.

Ladbrokes’ Alex Donohue said: “All of a sudden there’s a lot of confidence in the Lib Dems.”

“Within minutes of offering odds in Stoke there’s been a yellow stampede to support another shock victory over Labour.

“UKIP appear to be the main threat to the incumbent and we’ll be poised to cut their odds if Paul Nuttall puts himself forward for this pro-Leave constituency.”
