Team GB may still be waiting for their first gold medal at the London Olympics, but punters believe that one will be provided in the men’s lightweight coxless four.

The quartet of brothers Peter and Richard Chambers, Robert Williams and Chris Bartley have been well backed at 5/4 to triumph at Eton Dorney Lake after an impressive victory in their heat.

Team GB posted the fastest time of the three heats to cement their spot in the semi finals and their clocking of 5:49.9secs was only two seconds outside of the Olympic record.

However, what was most positive was the manner in which they surged clear late on in their heat, leaving two former world champions in their wake.

2011 champions Australia had to settle for second spot, with 2009 champions Germany back in third, but all three guaranteed their spots in the semi finals.

It is again the first three from the two semi finals that progress to the final and the good news for Team GB is that they have avoided Australia this time, while France, who were the second-fastest qualifiers from the heats, are also away from Team GB in the second semi final.

Each-way bets on the rowing discipline will see the first two paid out and there may be some value on the French here.

France can be backed at 20/1 to win the men’s lightweight four and if they were holding a bit back when winning their heat, they could be among the chief challengers to Team GB for a medal.

Alternatively, Australia are 7/2 in this market.

Denmark are the defending Olympic champions and also reached the final at the world championships last year in Slovenia.

They clearly have some history in the event and are 5/1 to take gold again, although they only finished third in their heat behind Switzerland and South Africa.
