2009 was a vintage year for the British Film Industry in terms of Oscar success, and 2011 is on course to better it according to the Oscars betting.

In 2009 Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire took home eight Academy Awards from a possible nine – it was nominated for ten but twice for Original Song – and The King’s Speech has received an incredible 12 Oscar nominations.

But David Fincher’s The Social Network is up for eight Oscars and the American biopic heads many of the Oscar betting markets.

Colin Firth is nailed on to win the Best Actor award with Oscar odds of 1/12, but The Social Network is the 4/9 favourite to win Best Film and David Fincher is 1/8 to win Best Director.

However Darren Oronofsky is a potential dark horse in the Best Director category for his work on Black Swan, and if there was to be a big upset, it is likely to be Oronofsky who is 14/1 to win Best Director.

There are 10 films in the race for Best Picture but the betting suggests it’s a two-horse race between Social Network and The King’s Speech.

Firth is up against James Franco (16/1), Jesse Eisenberg (16/1), Jeff Bridges (25/1) and Javier Bardem (50/1) for the Best Actor award, but it would be a huge shock should the Englishman not take home the award.

Natalie Portman heads the Best Actress betting at 1/6, and is up against Annette Bening (11/2), Jennifer Lawrence (16/1), Nicole Kidman (40/1) and Michelle Williams (66/1).

Christian Bale’s anorexic diet has paid off and he is the 1/9 favourite to win the Best Supporting Actor award and is up against Geoffrey Rush (11/2), Mark Ruffalo (66/1), John Hawkes (66/1) and Jeremy Renner (66/1).

Melissa Leo (4/7) takes on Hailee Steinfield (4/1), Helena Bonham Carter (7/1), Jacki Weaver (12/1) and Amy Adams (14/1) for the Best Supporting Actress award.

A £25 stake on Black Swan winning Best Picture would return £850. New customers can sign up here for a free bet worth £25.
