The NFL returns to our screens this weekend which can only mean one thing for these pages: questionable accumulator tips.

Our first attempt is a fivefold that pays around 6/1 and includes some toe-dipping selections that are guaranteed to land…we hope:

Houston Texans to beat Chicago Bears @ 2/5

The Texans’ in-your-face defence holds the key here. The unit set a franchise record with 45 sacks last season, which was the fifth most in the NFL.

With the Bears offence harbouring a few new faces, the last thing they want as they bid to ease themselves into familiarity in the first outing is JJ Watt and co storming them at every snap.

Kansas City Chiefs to beat San Diego Chargers @ 10/29

Based entirely on last year’s results it’s tough to look past the Chiefs for this one.

They beat the Chargers in both outings last season, while San Diego went through the entire year without bettering any of their fellow AFC West rivals.

Arizona Cardinals to beat New England Patriots @ 2/5

Tom Brady won’t be taking the snaps for the Patriots. He’s famously banned for the first four games of this season over the Deflategate scandal from the 2014 season.

His replacement is Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been waiting in Brady’s shadow for two years and has never started an NFL game.

That changes against a Cardinals defence that ranked fifth for total yards allowed last season. It’s going to be a nasty introduction.

Seattle Seahawks to beat Miami Dolphins @ 1/5

The Seahawks are favourites to win the Super Bowl this year and look formidable first-week opponents for the Dolphins’ rookie coach Adam Gase.

Seattle’s defence has been among the best around for a number of seasons now and last term quarterback Russell Wilson had one of the better seasons among his peers.

If both aspects perform as expected against the Dolphins, there’s only one winner.

San Francisco 49ers to beat Los Angeles Rams @ 23/20

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is gaining a lot of media attention for his protests during the national anthem before games, but he won’t even be starting this clash.

He’s backing up Blaine Gabbert in San Francisco these days, and the sixth-year passer enjoyed the best start of his NFL career against the Rams last season.

Gabbert threw for 354 yards as he led a 19-16 win over the then St Louis-based Rams. A year on, we’re backing him to sour the opponents’ move to Los Angeles and take the gloss off Kaepernick.
